PGCEA Art Build from MTEA Union on Vimeo.
Above is a link to a video by Joe Brusky documenting the March 2019 PGCEA (Prince George County Education Association) art build in Maryland. The art build was for PGCEA and other teacher unions in Maryland to prepare for a march in Annapolis on March 11, 2019 for public education justice. March for Our Students expects to see tens of thousands of people in the streets of Annapolis. (edit: Maryland teachers marched and won the vast majority of their demands!) The art build was organized to help produce the banners, picket signs, patches, and signs before hand. Paul Kjelland (Justseeds), Nicolas Lampert (Justseeds), Kim Cosier, Claudio Martinez, and Joe Brusky helped to coordinate the art build with PGCEA, and local D.C. and Baltimore artists created some of the key graphics. Jennifer White-Johnson and Vy Vu (who prior to this build had created some of the key banner designs for the Women’s March in DC) collaborated on a picket sign design and a banner design and César Maxit ( a key artist in the climate justice movement) designed a banner. Also, Los Angeles-based artist Nisha Sethi – who had created a key image for the UTLA movement – designed a picket sign for the Maryland teachers. Kim Cosier designed a parachute banner and Nicolas Lampert designed the second parachute banner, along with some text-based banners. The art build was an empowering weekend of solidarity and community building. Much respect to the many students, teachers, union organizers, parents, and community members who worked long hours on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday to ensure that PGCEA’s message will be seen in the streets of Annapolis. Stand with Maryland teachers as they stand up for their students!
